Our Pregnancy Story
Finding Out I Was Pregnant
I will never forget, one night at the end of November when I took the pregnancy test and found out I was pregnant. I called Trent on his way home from work, "Hey can you stop at Walgreens and grab a pregnancy test, my period is late and I want to be sure I am not pregnant before we head north and drink this weekend" He was shocked that I was even asking him to do that, but did what he was told with very few side comments (surprisingly). Trent and I were surprised to find out that we were pregnant! (I took 5 tests) He was excited immediately as he was ready to start a family right away. I was in shock for a good 24 hours before the excitement kicked in! It sounds cheesy, but since the moment I saw the positive tests, I thought "what if its twins?!"
Backstory: I babysat my friends twins occasionally from when they were very little and fell in love with them! Every time I was there I left thinking, it would be SO amazing to have twins. They had such a great family and it was always so fun! Watching them play together was so heartwarming and I was never bored thinking, "omgg when are they coming home".
We had planned to go visit our friends up north that weekend and we were wondering how we were going to keep it a secret as I am someone who always will say yes to a drink or glass of wine if people are socially drinking! The secret didn't last long and we ended up telling them that weekend! It was nice because my friend Liz is a family birthing nurse, had a baby of her own, so was able to tell me what to expect next.
The Monday after I got home, I called the doctor's office and told them "I think I'm pregnant" They asked me if I remembered the date of my last period and I said no. (I did, but I was told that if you "dont know" the last day of your period, they end up doing a date check ultrasound, otherwise you typically have to wait for an ultrasound until week 12) So, I went in that day to do the blood test that gives you the HCG level in your blood. In order to do the date check ultrasound, your HCG level needs to be about 5,000.
Later that day after I took the blood test, the nurse called me back and said "Um Hi Clare? yea, your level was 24,000. We want you to come in right away to do a date check ultrasound because that is really high for your estimated 5 weeks." That was the second moment where I had the "what if its twins" thought! I was also thinking there is no way I am further along than I think, right?!
Finding Out We Were Having Twins
Trent and I went in for the ultrasound a few days later and the nurse was being kind of short with us as we watched her small tiny screen. She was bouncing around a lot. Also, that early ultrasound is VERY WEIRD, so be prepared. You basically have to stick a curling iron up there, it's not a belly ultrasound. I think Trent even giggled to me, "that looks like the thing you curl your hair with!" Trent works in the medical field and knew a lot more about ultrasounds than I did, and was able to follow the screen a little better. At one point he asked the nurse "So, you've been checking heart beats on two different hearts, is one Clare's heart rate and one the baby's?" Her response was, "hold on please".. Trent started to really focus in on the screen and a few minutes later he said to the nurse, "Ok, I know you told me to hold on, but I have to ask you, are we having twins??" Then nurse did not respond, and instead turned on the large screen in the room so we could see a big picture of what she was seeing and said, "Congratulations, you are having twins and here are the two little heart beats!"
Trent immediately stood up, hugged me, grabbed my hand and and we both were in shock but SO happy. I remember both of our hands being very clammy.
There we were 6 weeks pregnant with twins!
Trent and I felt so fortunate and blessed. For the longest time I thought that it was too good to to be true. Even though Trent and I were not "trying", we are so beyond thankful that we were able to get pregnant, and that we were pregnant with two babies. We know getting pregnant is not always as easy as they made it seem in high school health class, so we are thankful, grateful and we think about it every day.
